One minute you’re admiring Gaudí’s architecture, and the next you’re walking along the Mediterranean with your shoes in your hand. After exploring museums, markets, and historic neighborhoods all week, Barceloneta was the perfect place to slow down for a few hours. The palm trees, sea breeze, and long stretch of Mediterranean coastline made it easy to forget we were in the middle of one of Europe’s most vibrant cities. It may have been Gaudí’s first masterpiece, but it’s every bit as captivating as his more famous works. Walking into Machito Cantina felt like stepping in Walking into Machito Cantina felt like stepping into another work of art. The food was every bit as vibrant as the restaurant itself. From the colorful papel picado hanging overhead to the brightly painted walls and beautifully plated dishes, every detail was full of personality. We stumbled across this colorful little Mexican restaurant after spending the morning exploring Park Güell, and it couldn’t have been a better lunch stop. We split an order of five tacos so we could try one of each—Carnitas, Cochinita Pibil, Tinga Poblana, Suadero, and Chilorio—along with the enchiladas verdes and a pitcher of their incredibly refreshing sparkling basil limeade.
